The Vineyards of Bergerac

The wine growing region of Bergerac is only a 40 minute drive from us and the vineyards cover more than 12,000 hectares.   They produce red, dry white, semi-sweet and a sweet wine.

The sweet wine of Monbazillac is best drunk very chilled as an aperitif and goes exceptionally well with the regional speciality of foie gras.   Bergerac rosé is very good and widely drunk in this region by the French.

If you would like to explore the vineyards of Bergerac for some wine sampling then we can point you in the right direction and can supply maps on how to find the vineyards and Chateaux.

Saint-Emilion

Saint-Emilion is renowned around the world.  The vineyards here total an area of 5,400 hectares with 822 winegrowers, 13 Premiers Grands Crus Classés and 55 Grands Crus Classés.  Most of the Saint-Emilion vineyards are family-owned and small but produce excellent red wines.

There is even a wine school, Ecole du Vin de Saint-Emilion where you can attend a one hour course (in English) run by an oenologist.  The courses run from July to mid September and cost about 17€ person.  Or you could visit Vignobles et Châteaux for an introduction to wine tasting by a professional the 1 ½ hour course is run every day in English from October to April and costs 20€ per person.

Pomerol

The appellation of Pomerol covers 750 hectatre and is north-west of Saint-Emilion.  There are over 150 wine-growers many of which only operate from 2 hectares of vineyards.  The Pomerol area is dedicated exclusively to red wines which have never been officially classified but some are considered to be a Premier Grand Cru.
